There is a growing number of books, kits and plans on how to DIY, "Do It Yourself" and make your own renewable energy for your home using solar panels and wind turbines. This is due to the ever increasing cost of electricity, and the rising tide of people who are wanting to "Go Green" and do something to help alleviate the damage we are doing to our planet. If you spend any amount of time surfing the web, I’m sure you’ve come across at least a few of them. They are also found in offline sources as magazines, newspapers and television news reports.

If you’ve ever wondered if any of them work or are as easy as they say to build and use, welcome to the club. I’ve been interested in alternative methods of supplying my home with electricity for awhile now. My main reason is because I want to do whatever I can to make the world a better place for our children, reducing the negative impact that so many  of our actions have on the earth, and to try to leave as little waste as possible during my everyday life. Of course, saving any amount of money at the same time would be a bonus.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of research, reading whatever I can find on the subject of using solar or wind power to lessen my dependency on the electricity flowing through the wires into my home. If I lived close enough to a fast moving stream or river, I would also be looking at hydro power as well. Since I, and the majority of people don’t, I have focused on solar and wind as the only practical ways to provide power, since they are readily available almost everywhere.

If your like me at all, it sure is confusing trying to make sense of all the claims and promises that these guides want us to believe. I was sure that they can’t all be right, but on the other hand, they all can’t be wrong either. There has to be at least some truth in what they are selling, or there wouldn’t be so many out there. I was determined to find out what was real, and if something would actually work as claimed.

I finally made the decision to stop wasting time, getting buried beneath the avalanche of information, and spend a few dollars. I asked around in forums, hardware stores, people that I knew, even a few strangers in the street. After hearing some experiences of others, I finally chose as my first purchase an eBook called Home Made Energy. It comes with a 60 day money back guarantee, so I wasn’t too worried if it turned out to be too much for me to handle.

It wasn’t expensive, and other people  told me their experiences with it were positive, so it seemed like a good place to start. I was attracted to it also because it was developed by a 52 year old man from my home state of California named Bill Ford. He is a Scientist, Researcher, Inventor, Energy Consultant, and founder of the Home Made Energy program. He has spent a lot of time and effort in putting this guide together, and it really shows. It’s easy to understand, not too technical, which is good, because I am not an engineer. I’m also not the handiest of guys around a tool shop, and I was not intimidated by what I received.

The plans were straightforward, the diagrams easy to understand, everything was provided in a step by step format which made it easy to follow along, and actually kind of fun. Believe it or not, for about $175 and about 6 hours time, I had my first solar panel finished. It wasn’t the picture perfect one you see in the ads, due to my not so handyman tool work, but it wasn’t that ugly, and it worked! I know that after a few more, they will look as good as they perform. I may use the first one to take camping, since they are portable.

Here is a testimonial from the website to go along with mine:

I’m so glad I tried your system. I made my first solar panel this weekend and I wanted to let you know it’s awesome.

With your diagrams work was a breeze. Only one panel saves me a big chunk of electricity. Next weekend I’ll do another one. Most likely with 2 or 3 of these I will be able to eliminate my electric bill for good.

Thank you very much,

I will probably try a windmill soon, as here in Florida it’s windy almost as much as it is sunny. The cost to build one should be cheaper than the solar panel, and with both methods going, I should be supplied with juice whether the sun is out or not.

I will be looking at a few of the other guides out there to see how they compare, and will let you know how they stack up. But I can tell you this, you can’t go wrong if you try Bill Ford’s Home Made Energy.
